Marist Catholic High School - Eugene, Oregon

Defining leadership

Student Leadership Development
At Marist Catholic High School leadership emerges through the person of Jesus Christ as the model of Servant-Leadership. Our Christian vision calls all students to recognize that they have been created with a divine purpose to express their individual gifts, talents and abilities in active participation within their community. At Marist, Servant-Leadership facilitates intentionality of effort, decision and change rooted in Gospel values, an holds that all students are capable of exercising this kind of leadership. Regardless of academic or extracurricular setting, on campus or off, the Marist student who embodies Servant-Leadership utilizes personal resources in purposeful and communal collaboration resulting in practical action that builds relationships and serves others.

Staff Mission Orientation and Faith Formation
From initial orientation to the Marist mission at the beginning of their employment through continuous improvement and faith formation led purposefully by Marist Campus Ministry, all staff are nurtured by means of a retreat program and guided through faith formation to create a culture that animates the Marist mission.

Nurturing Faith

Theology at Marist [a 4-year graduation requirement]
Studies show that teenagers today live in a culture that emphasizes the primacy of personal choice, even in religious matters. Recognizing this reality, efforts at Marist to encourage a lifelong practice of faith likewise relies on research, which indicates the following factors as most impacting:
  • theology that is substantive and connected to the lives of students,
  • a classroom approach that engages students actively in their own learning, helping them explore and consider the value of religious faith and practice, and
  • the credibility and witness of the teacher as a person of faith.
Marist seeks intentionally to construct religious instruction and faith formation in a way that reflects all three of these elements. Partnering together with a family life that supports religious activity, and with active parish participation, today’s students are best positioned to become lifelong committed persons of faith.

Other opportunities for students to nurture one's faith at Marist include:
Daily pray, weekly Mass, monthly all-school Mass, team/activity Masses, Eucharistic ministry, Proclaim Liturgical Choir, Retreat Program, Christian Service program, and excellence in athletics, clubs and extracurricular activities.

"When a good leader awakens the depth of presence in another and encounters the sacredness and inner world of the other, leadership is truly transformational and healing. In its deepest sense, the spirituality of leadership is really the ministry of service to possibility.”
